Abstract

The Bombardier beetle {Brachinus sp., Metrius sp., Stenaptinus sp.) has been often studied due to its ability to synthesize and spray a hot, noxious combination of benzoquinones and oxygen. Abdomens of Brachinus favicollis collected in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, California, were studied under transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The spray nozzle is shown to be more complex than previously reported. Bacteria were found in the lumen of the secretory lobes, but not in digestive structures.
