Abstract

A new species of a new genus of trematopsid labyrinthodont amphibian, Ecolsonia cutlerensis, is described on the basis of a partial skull found in the Lower Permian of northern New Mexico. The basic similarities to other trematopsids, including the presence of the characteristically elongated external narial opening, are clear; but in the nature of the palate — with wide interpterygoid vacuities — Ecolsonia shows marked resemblances to the dissorophid labyrinthodonts. This reinforces earlier assessments of close relationship between the trematopsids and dissorophids.
