Abstract
This paper, entitled ?No Exit: Mario Vargas Llosa and the Peruvian Predicament?, looks at three novels by Vargas Llosa: Conversation in the Cathedral, The Storyteller, and Death in the Andes. Each of these novels being set in a different geographical location with Peru, be it coast, jungle, or Sierra, allow for a more complete view of Vargas Llosa?s representation of his country. More specifically this paper intends to discuss the various ways in which the novels of Llosa present the impossibility of creating a successful personal identity within a broken political system. Furthermore, it addresses the ways in which ethical action is rendered impossible within the parameters that Vargas Llosa sets up in these three works.
