De Hass van Alphen Measurements of RBe13 Compounds, R = Pr, Th, La
Since its discovery in the early 1930s, the de Haas van Alphen effect (dHvA) has become a very powerful tool in fermiology, the study of the Fermi surface of metals. dHvA is the oscillation of susceptibility with a changing magnetic field. To our knowledge, this phenomenon has not yet been reported in any of the RBe13 compounds. We have found dHvA oscillations at low temperatures in PrBe13 powder, and have also measured the effect along the  crystalographic direction in single crystals of ThBe13 and LaBe13. The results may lead to a better characterization of the Fermi surface and thus the electronic properties of the elusive heavy fermion compound, UBe13.
