Abstract

We studied thermal expansion measurements of YbNi2B2C, a heavy fermion compound, taken with a capacitive dilatometer at Ames Laboratory, Iowa (summer 2005) and Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico (summer 2004). Measurements were made to temperatures as low as 1.8 K and to fields as high as 14 T. The thermal expansion was measured along the two crystallographic axes and combined to derive the volume thermal expansion. The results from both laboratories were in good agreement with each other within experimental uncertainty. Our volume thermal expansion results are consistent with previously published specific heat measurements, both of which show the onset of heavy fermion behavior at near 10 K. Both data sets show an anisotropy in the thermal expansion between the crystallographic axes. Further analysis to be done on the thermal expansion measurements includes a Gruneisen analysis to characterize the energy scales of the compound.
