Abstract

This radio documentary is an exploration into the spirit of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua and how it has been reborn in coffee cooperatives across the country. By following the history of political uprisings in Nicaragua, the documentary demonstrates how a new kind of movement is taking place; one without guns or guerilla fighters but one with fair trade certification and organic coffee. The radio documentary examines how these cooperatives are fighting to find a place in the expanding global market as a seemingly obsolete force: the small farmer. Their voice is gaining strength as movements of "conscious consumerism" shake the western world and cause even the most moderate buyer to question their everyday purchases and the ethical implications of them. The radio documentary examines the possibility for a sustainable future in these cooperatives, and the severe difficulties that threaten the progress of these organizations as they fight to survive.
