The Los Angeles housing crisis continues to grow worse despite improvements in policy and actions taken in recent years. At the root of the problem is gentrification taking place in areas like downtown LA. Many Angelinos have faced illegal evictions, discrimination, and other housing-related problem such as toxic and infestations creating an uncomfortable living situation as well as a health hazard. In the past year, the luxurious condos, apartments, and high rises that have become the backdrop of the La sky have appeared because of the displacement of the poor in these areas. In order to help combat the housing crisis in Los Angeles, many grassroots organizations have taken the lead in advocating for these victims. Established in October 1995, Los Angeles ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) has dedicated countless hours to help acquire more affordable housing units and help arraign developers who opt not to build affordable housing units. I interned with ACORN and helped organize actions on affordale housing.
