    Pulsed Laser Deposition of Metal-containing Films on Supported Self-assembled Monolayers.

    Abstract
    A diffusion-pumped, high vacuum system was built for pulsed laser deposition studies. A variety of metal-containing films deposited on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been and will be studied in order to elucidate the nature of the metal-organic interface. Using the second harmonic (532 nm) of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, silver was laser deposited on a dodecanethiol monolayer chemisorbed to Au (111). Annealed gold balls provide the (111) surface. The film surface is characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These data provide qualitative information about the nature of the interaction between the organic functional group on the SAM and the metal overlayer. Currently, we are working to characterize the nature of the molybdenum disulfide/organic layer interface.
