    Abstract
How free of a society is Israel? An examination of the writings of Israeli legal scholars, sociologists, history, and political theory in the context of current events revealed a society in transition from a purely majoritarian state, to a liberal democratic state, one which is struggling with a conflict between two of the basic values of Israel: its role as a Jewish and Democratic state.
