dc.description.abstractThe difficulty of learning Ancient Greek is apparent in the various approaches to its instruction. However, in recent decades, with the development of pedagogy as a discipline within the social sciences, there has been a growing suspicion that the language itself was not to blame for this difficulty; it was felt rather that the methods by which it was taught were at fault. In response to this difficulty, Dr. Damian Stocking has developed a new approach that he tentatively calls the ?generative paradigm? method. Rather than simply presenting alienating paradigms of inflections and grammar, students are taught the system that underlies the paradigm, and the linguistic rules that account for perceived irregularities. The key feature of the generative paradigm method is that it works by explanation rather than by rote memorization. However, Dr. Stocking has left a few gaps in his explanations. The purpose of my research and this talk is to fill some of those gaps, specifically in the presentation of the present, active, indicative verb system and the different forms of the verb ?to be? in Ancient Greek.
