Eco-Oxy/Eco-Los Angeles, established by the Pollution Prevention Education and Research Center, created a team of researchers along with facilities employees to work together on assessing the environmental hazards of the equipment and campus water consumption. Regarding paper consumption, the copy center was examined. Paper is bought on an economic and not environmental basis. Bruce Steele, the Environmental Hazard and Safety manager, was consulted for hazardous waste disposal. Three major producers of hazardous waste are: the chemistry and biology departments, and facilities. These departments only choice for disposal of hazardous waste is to pack it into drums and incinerate them through a thermo-oxidation process, which has environmental impacts. Facilities has more options and is able to recycle used coolant and paints. For electronic equipment, I focused on the audio visual department (AV). Not much waste exists at AV since the lifetime of equipment is pretty lengthy and the equipment is well taken care of. The major environmental issue identified for the AV department was the inability to recycle batteries since there is no major recycler willing to accept used batteries from an institution. Campus water consumption was also analyzed. Eco-Oxy researchers itemized the types of toilets, sinks, and shower heads used on campus.
