This paper synthesizes the translation and reception of Don Quixote in China and Korea. It focuses on how the literary censorship in each country influenced a more romantic interpretation of the work and applies the theories of Bakhtin to show how like the prisoners, both China and Korea also use language as a medium of liberation. The paper explains the theory of reception by examining the comic and romantic interpretations, gives historical context of the literary censorship, summarizes the history of the translations, analyzes the reception of the work, and lastly, uses the theories of Bakhtin to demonstrate a parallelism between the countries and the prisoners.
