Redescription and Taxonomic Comparison of Three Eastern Pacific Species of Muricea (Cnidaria: Anthozoa)
Colony morphology, sclerite analysis, color pattern and habitat can be used to differentiate between two common species of gorgonians, Muricea fru- ticosa and M. californica, in southern California. Examination of type material indicates that M. appressa (Verrill) is not a synonym of M. californica, but con- siderable taxonomic confusion still exists regarding the nomenclature of eastern Pacific species of Muricea.
